About:

WEDACS™ is short for Waste Energy Driven Air Conditioning System and concerns a revolutionary add-on technology for gasoline engine powered vehicles which:

  1. Reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions up to 10-15 % for a MVEG-A drive cycle.
  2. Increases engine torque up to 10-15%.
  3. Offers a CO2 neutral Air conditioning function without the need for harmful carier fluids.
  4. Is easy to implement in both new and used gasoline engine powered vehicles.
  5. Low-Cost alternative of “Direct Injection“.

How it works:

Most gasoline cars are fitted with a throttle valve which generates energy losses at all driving conditions other then full throttle. This is due to the fact that at all throttle positions, other then full throttle, there is a pressure drop over this valve. Replacing this standard throttle valve with a rotating throttle valve (turbine), creates the possibility to convert this otherwise wasted energy in :

1) Rotational energy

2) Thermal (Cold) energy

1) Rotational energy is created by expanding air (pressure drop) over a turbine, which makes the turbine spin.

2) Thermal (Cold) energy is generated by expanding the air over the turbine while extracting rotational energy, which causes the air temperature to drop.

1) Rotational energy can be used to power a generator, creating 3) Electrical energy.

2) Thermal (cold) energy can be used as air conditioning and as intercooler to improve engine performance.  In order to combine both the air conditioning- and intercooler function, an heat exchanger is placed in the cold air stream.

The ability of WEDACS™ to covert otherwise wasted energy into 1) Electrical energy and 2) Thermal (Cold) energy results in the aforementioned advantages.

Main Components:

WEDACS™ is based on three basic components:

1) Turbine (1) Rotational energy)

2) Heat-Exchanger (2) Thermal (Cold) energy )

3) Generator (3) Electrical energy)

Research & Development:

At the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) a Maserati Quattroporte has been converted to WEDACS™ demonstrator vehicle. This WEDACS™-Maserati is put to the test as a TAXI in Eindhoven.

For more information about the Standard Maserati Quattroporte, watch the Dutch review below by Volkskrant TV.

More Research & Development:

WEDACS™ is being developed and tested by means of a large scale Real World Environment field-test.

More Testing:

In order to make sure WEDACS™ makes its easy implementability and durability come true, a Mercedes 450SEL built in 1975 will be fitted with WEDACS™ and put to the test under the worst imaginable conditions; The Amsterdam-Dakar Challenge.
